3rd and Long — Replay the 1984 NFL Season With Dice

The 1984 Season

Dan Marino put up numbers in 1984 that looked like a misprint. 5,084 passing yards. 48 touchdowns. A completion percentage no one had matched at that level of volume. The Miami Dolphins went 14–2 behind him, the most efficient passing offence in NFL history to that point. They were the prohibitive favourites heading into January. A dynasty, people said.

Then they met San Francisco.

The 49ers went 15–1. Joe Montana under Bill Walsh, a precision offence that dissected every defence it faced. They didn't just win — they controlled. Super Bowl XIX at Stanford Stadium was supposed to be the passing duel of the decade. It became a 49er clinic. Final score: San Francisco 38, Miami 16. Montana was named MVP. Marino was held well below his season standard. One of the best regular seasons a quarterback has ever had, and it ended with a loss most people still remember.

Behind the top two, the season had its own weight. Denver went 13–3 on a dominant defence. Seattle won 12. The Raiders — defending Super Bowl champions — finished 11–5 and still didn't win their division. The AFC West was a gauntlet. Chicago went 10–6 behind a defence that was becoming something special, a preview of what was coming in 1985. At the other end, Buffalo won 2 games. Minnesota won 3. Those results mattered — they handed wins to teams in the playoff picture every time they appeared on the schedule.

How It Works

3rd and Long uses a D100 resolution engine. Roll 1d100 for the home team, add the pre-calculated Home Mod, look up the score. Roll for the away team, add the Away Mod, look up. Higher score wins. Tied? Overtime.

A full game takes 3–5 minutes. A complete 16-week season plus playoffs in a single sitting.

What you need: Two d100 dice and a pencil.

Week 1 — Washington at Miami

Miami Dolphins (OFF 20, DEF 19) hosting the Washington Redskins (OFF 17, DEF 15).

Miami at home. Home Mod: (20 − 15) × 2 + 3 = +13. Away Mod: (17 − 19) × 2 = −4.

Miami's home modifier is +13 — one of the largest in the league, reflecting Marino's historic offence behind a defence that didn't give up easy points. Washington at −4 is the underdog on the road, even at 11–5. The away modifier going negative means Washington's offence has to work against Miami's defensive rating.

Roll 71 for Miami (+13) = 84 → 35 points. Roll 68 for Washington (−4) = 64 → 28 points. Miami win 35–28. Marino to Mark Clayton, Marino to Mark Duper, all season long.

(Real result: Miami won 35–17. The engine gets the winner right and produces a reasonable scoreline.)
