The 1980 NFL season is one of the most chaotic in league history.

The Oakland Raiders became the first wild card team in history to win the Super Bowl, beating the Philadelphia Eagles — who were appearing in their first Super Bowl ever. The San Diego Chargers put up the most explosive offense in the league behind Dan Fouts and Air Coryell. The Pittsburgh Steelers, fresh off back-to-back championships, stumbled to 9–7. In the NFC, Dallas and Philadelphia went toe-to-toe all season.

How It Works

3rd and Long uses a D100 resolution engine. One roll per team, one lookup on the scoring table, one result.

Roll 1d100 for the home team. Add the pre-calculated Home Mod. Look up the score. Roll for the away team. Add the Away Mod. Look up the score. Higher total wins. Tied? Go to overtime.

A full game takes about 3–5 minutes. A complete 16-week regular season plus playoffs in a single evening.

What you need: Two d100 dice (or one rolled twice) and a pencil.

Week 1 — Oakland at Kansas City

Oakland Raiders (OFF 14, DEF 15) at Kansas City Chiefs (OFF 13, DEF 14).

Kansas City at home. Home Mod: (13 − 15) × 2 + 3 = −1. Away Mod: (14 − 14) × 2 = 0.

Two evenly matched teams. One good roll either way and it's decided. That's 3rd and Long — the engine doesn't need flavour rules to produce drama. The numbers do it.
